One way many centers calculate utilization is patient hours divided by chair hours which is a misleading way to measure utilization. There are several factors to consider when calculating your center’s utilization:

  • Patient volumes
  • Peak chair utilization
  • Patient hours
  • Percentage of days that you run out of chairs
  • Ability to absorb add-ons and other adverse events

In addition, it is important to keep in mind there are nuances that impact each of the above metrics such as your intake processes, nurse/chair resource alignment and many more.
