A nursing shortage was predicted long before the COVID-19 pandemic began, and the additional strain on healthcare providers since then has accelerated the timeline for nurse departures. Correspondingly, the demand for staff in the perioperative space remains high while the supply continues to decrease and the pandemic made retention of staff even more of a challenge. A recent AORN survey illustrates the impact of nursing shortages on surgery, with 58% of its respondents reporting that staffing issues had led to delayed or canceled surgeries (an increase of 16% since 2020*)
